Our Funders


The service is funded by the Seamen's Hospital Society with contributions from other maritime charities including Seafarers UK, the Merchant Navy Welfare Board and the Maritime Charities Funding Group.

The Seamen's Hospital Society was established in 1821, and incorporated under Act of Parliament 1833 and amended under Statutory Instrument No. 73 the Charities (Seamen's Hospital Society) Order 1999.

"The object of the Society shall be the relief of seamen and seawomen of all nations within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and their immediate dependants (including widows, widowers and children of deceased seafarers) who through sickness, misfortune or age are in need of assistance and providing such persons with medical and surgical aid, lodging, support and clothing".

The Seamen's Hospital Society helps people currently employed in or retired from the Merchant Navy, fishing fleets, and their dependants.

The Seamen's Hospital provides grants for a variety of purposes including

  • Medical items (such as wheelchairs, recliner riser chairs, stair lifts, installation of disabled access)
  • Household items, cookers, washing machines, beds, decorating costs
  • Holidays , convalescent and respite breaks
  • Clothing
  • Priority bills
  • Assistance towards funeral expenses
